REGIONS AFFECTED

The Arctic

The Arctic is the largest region affected by climate change. The Arctic is composed of large ice sheets and glaciers that have been steadily deteriorating due to the rise in temperatures over the past 100 years. The area of ice in the Arctic has gone down from 34,000 square kilometers to 17,000 square kilometers over the past 30 years (1979-2019), which is a 50% decrease in ice.

Africa

Because of Africa's already endemic difficulties such as poverty, political conflicts, and state of ecosystem maintenance, it is more vulnerable to the effects of climate change. The current water shortage situation in Africa will keep getting worse as climate change continues. These changes will inevitably compromise agricultural production and access to food across the continent.

Small Islands

Whether in tropical or higher latitudes, small islands disproportionately experience harsh weather and changes in sea level. Because of these conditions, islands have become more sensitive to climate change. The deterioration in coastal conditions, such as beach erosion, will negatively affect fisheries and tourism, ultimately causing a substantial decrease in economic activity.
